“I’m not interested in formulas when it comes to surfing and art.” Ryan Lovelace talks to Chris Preston about trusting your eyes, hands, and feet, and adding another leaf to the weird-hull-alternative-vibe tree.
All over the world surfers are buying blanks, picking up tools and making their own boards; eschewing the mass-produced standards of the day in favor of the satisfaction they get from riding something built by their own hands, filled with their own ideas, either from necessity or curiosity. Some of these people have the gift to shape well—by accident, fate or otherwise.
Ryan Lovelace is just such a shaper. Based in Santa Barbara, he started shaping from both curiosity and necessity. Since then he has followed his own path, unafraid to question the status quo, drawing influences from his local environment and experience and breathing new life and ideas into his shapes.
