Wheels Go 'Round

After that day I was hooked, but it was a long time between surfs, sometimes months until the next school holidays or family day at the beach. Luckily my Dad bought my brothers and me some old ‘Surfing World’ magazines and the images and feelings from those mags kept me stoked and interested until my next surf. Maybe that’s why I have something to do with creating images of surfing. Sometimes that feels just as good as the act of surfing.

JB: Is that what inspired you to get into filming?

MW: Yeah, all those ‘Surfing World’ magazines and the classic surf films like Morning of the Earth, Storm Riders, Endless Summer and Big Wednesday. They all made surfing look so pure and fun. No stickers or sponsors’ logos, just guys and girls traveling, surfing and enjoying the lifestyle. Why wouldn’t you be influenced by it? I figure that is why I film surfing now because it’s a great lifestyle that lets you travel and be creative. My films are a reflection of the way I see surfing and the world.
